One avocado a day: the anti-cholesterol fruit

In a study by Pennsylvania State University, 45 overweight people were instructed to follow three identical-calorie diets to lower cholesterol: one low-fat diet and two others made up of moderate fat intake which included either avocado or dried fruit and oil.

After five weeks, the diet including avocado has been shown to be the most effective at lowering “ bad ” cholesterol or LDL. According to the study, it would be the components of avocado – and not just the good fats it contains – that made it so effective in fighting LDL cholesterol.

Avocados contain more phytosterols [57 mg for half an avocado], compounds found in plants and linked to cholesterol reduction, than any other fruit,” says the report. But wait, that’s not the reason to indulge in the nachos and the guacamole, you need to have a balanced diet: the study participants ate two balanced meals a day, such as a chicken salad and a turkey taco, each containing half an avocado.

We also recommend this simple recipe, as a starter or for breakfast: pit a half avocado and break an egg in a place of the pit. Cook it for 15-20 minutes in an oven at 220 ° C and enjoy it.
